The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) sets rules and guidelines regarding the most critical technical aspects of various components manufactured for industrial use in North America. All ANSI-compliant Baelz valves are also compliant with ISA specifications. This is due to the International Society of Automation’s (ISA) reaffirmation of existing ISA valve-related standards, which include ANSI valve standards.

As such, any ANSI-certified valve from Baelz may be used in any North American industrial flow control operation. Producing valves according to ANSI valve standards means adhering to a comprehensive set of rules that affect a valve’s most important characteristics, including:

  • Connection types and dimensions
  • Valve sizing
  • Pressure ratings
  • Markings
  • Tag positions
  • Factory testing procedures
  • Casting and Materials

ANSI Valve Standards: Sizing

All ANSI-certified valves follow standard specifications regarding sizing, such as:

  • Flange dimensions
  • Face-to-face dimensions
  • Flange bolt patterns (for connection to ANSI standard piping)
  • Pressure requirements
  • Valve body material

Each of these valve sizing aspects must be in American standard measurements (inches, psi).

ANSI Valve Standards: Factory Testing

The structural integrity of every Baelz ANSI-certified valve is factory tested to ensure durability and leak proof, according to the stringent testing requirements defined by ANSI.

The valves are tested with a liquid that may consist of water, water with an added corrosion inhibitor, or other approved liquids with similar specific gravity. Pressure and time testing parameters are dependent on the type of material the valve is constructed from, nominal valve size, and the valve’s classification.

In order to pass all tests, a valve needs to:

  • Display no visible leaks on the valve body during the hydro testing process
  • Allow no leaks at the flanges, the stem, or any other part of the valve that must hold pressure.
  • Valve function has no impairment during testing

ANSI Valve Standards: Tag Placement / Marking

The ability to identify a valve’s specification is crucial in the industrial field. Such information may include:

  • Manufacturer
  • Materials of construction
  • Nominal diameter
  • Pressure rating designation
  • All internal components

For this reason, ANSI requires the placement of valve identification tags on the face of the b-port flange.

Benefits of ANSI / ISA Certification

Using ANSI-certified valves ensures that every valve will support the required temperature, flow, and pressures. Valve standardization also means that valves are easily replaced, or that repairs and upgrades can be performed with limited delay and downtime.

With more than 100 years of experience manufacturing valves and industrial solutions, Baelz provides a wide variety of German-made, high-quality ANSI/ISA-certified valves, covering every need across the comprehensive range of industrial sectors.
